Bio

Duane and Doris are long-time residents of Whatcom County, WA where they are currently planting a church in Bellingham.

Born in Walla Walla, Washington, Duane graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland before being commissioned into the United States Marine Corps where he earned the rank of Captain. Growing up in a Roman Catholic family, it was at USNA that Duane came to know Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior.

Doris Araújo Smith was born in Poncé, Puerto Rico to medical doctors. She came to know Christ as a young child in California and then graduated from Wheaton College, where she majored in literature. Doris enjoys music, teaching children, getting to know people, and engaging them in meaningful conversation.

Duane and Doris met at church in Orange County, CA where Doris grew up. Upon discharge from the USMC, Duane spent the majority of his career working as a mechanical and project engineer for various contractors building new oil refineries and upgrading existing ones. The Smiths have four married sons and seventeen grandchildren.

At fifty-nine years of age after sensing a call to the pastorate, Duane enrolled in seminary at Bob Jones University in August 2011. Upon completing his MDiv in August 2015, Duane served as an intern pastor at Faith Baptist Church, Taylors, SC for ten months.

The Smiths, together with one other family and two young adults, relocated to Whatcom County, Washington during the months of August and September 2016. With the support of Dave and Claudia Barba several thousand postcards and door-hangers were distributed in addition to making hundreds of phone calls.

After meeting in the Smith’s home for several weeks, the first formal worship service was held on November 13th at a local hotel. The new church, Providence Baptist (PBC), was chartered on May 21st, 2017. Pastor Michael Privett was in attendance with his wife, Sherri, and did the preaching. Seventeen members joined PBC that day.

The members of Providence are continuing outreach activities that include phone calling, children’s Bible studies, one-on-one evangelism/discipleship using The Exchange Bible study, leading a ladies’ Bible study in a retirement community, meeting as many people as possible, and spending much time together in fellowship and prayer.
